Fogo Island elopement
An island off an island. The Atlantic doing what it wants.
The edge of the world, and worth every mile
Fogo Island sits off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, out in the North Atlantic where the weather arrives straight from Greenland. Red fishing stages on stilts. Barrens of rock and juniper. Villages that have held onto the edge of the world for three hundred years.
An elopement here is not a backdrop choice. It is a commitment to the real. Fog rolling in over the harbour. Wind that makes you hold each other or fall over. Icebergs drifting past in spring like slow white ships. The two of you, warm inside all of it, saying the strongest words of your lives.
My camera knows this island. I have travelled Newfoundland end to end and documented love stories in its ice and fog. When the light breaks over the stages at the end of the day, there is nowhere on earth I would rather be standing with a couple.
I am Yanick Lesperance, elopement photographer and filmmaker based in Eastern Canada. On Fogo I am your guide as much as your witness. The ferry, the villages, the headlands worth the walk, the hours worth waiting for. You get me. Nothing less. Nobody else.

FAQ
Questions about eloping in Fogo Island
How do we get to Fogo Island?
Fly to Gander or Deer Lake in Newfoundland, drive to Farewell, and take the ferry across to the island. The journey is part of the story. I will help you plan the route and the timing.
When can we see icebergs on Fogo Island?
Iceberg season usually runs from late spring into early summer, when the Atlantic carries them down past the island. Fog season, berry season and storm season each give the place a different face. Every one of them photographs beautifully.
What is the best season for a Fogo Island elopement?
Each of Fogo Island's seven seasons has its truth. Summer for long light and calm seas. Fall for berries and empty roads. Winter for ice, snow and the hardest, softest light of the year.
Can we marry legally on Fogo Island?
Yes, with a Newfoundland and Labrador marriage licence and an officiant on the island. I will point you to the right people. Some couples sign at home and keep the vows for the headlands.
Why elope on Fogo Island instead of somewhere easier?
Because easy is forgettable. Fogo Island asks something of you, and gives back a day that feels like the edge of the world. Couples who choose it never describe it as a location. They describe it as a turning point.
